Description

Ok, this place seriously freaked me out. But anyway, here is my favourite shot from the explore.

Location = The former RAF Nocton Hall Hospital, close to Lincoln, England.

Hope you enjoy, thanks for viewing. :)

There is an almost ominous feeling about the three conduits running down this expansive hallway. The spacing of the windows compliments the assymetry of the pipes only in 3 quarters of the shot. The way the view is shifted slightly to the left amplifies these things well.

What I find more interesting is the smooth zig-zag between warm and cool as the shadows and highlights mix together. It creates a sensation of firm connection, much as the rigid image of a zipper would, without the geometric simplicity. The entire image has nuances made of imperfection.

The plaster is chipping away, and the tiles have left their uniform grid, and yet the way the artist has captured an otherwise simple space makes it so that one sees all these deviations as part of a greater whole. The technique involved flawlessly captures the idea of chaos in an ordered structure.

My only qualm would be that this genre of photography is becoming somewhat cliche (perhaps thanks to all the post-punk photo shoots we've had over the years). The atmosphere has great potential, but it would be nice to see this feeling used to the end of expressing a message, or making a statement on what these kinds of things say about our general existense, and day to day lives. The air is ripe with character, and yet it sits still, not ushering a single word, or any point to think on.

Regardless, the bold perspective leads me to feel that the artist finds some kind of solace in this secluded place. There are no eyes to question why he feels the need to capture living places as flat images. In that sense, this work can evoke in one a sense that we all seek a place to feel undistracted, and that the cosmetic nature of our surroundings is never an essential part of finding such things.
